Assignment #2: "Food Inc." Movie Review

The movie and the people making it did not say anything I disagreed with, for I support their effort in trying to educate Americans about food. However, the movie did expose many things that I disagree with. The thing I found most shocking was the part of the movie on the chicken farm. The farmer had the windows blacked out; the chickens never even see light during their entire life-span. I’m not sure why that bothered me so much. I’m not a vegetarian, but the way they treat these animals is not only unhealthy for us, but just plain cruel to the animals. I thought critically when it was mentioned how the ecoli spreads from one cow to another due to the cows standing in their own feces. It made me begin to question how healthy/clean the meat I eat actually is and where it’s from. If the animals raised for food are extremely unhealthy, that makes the meat we eat from those animals just as unhealthy. This movie definitely impacted me by helping me understand that even when you’re on a tight budget, it’s important to find a way to eat locally. That family in the movie who ate dollar menu food all the time had a very hard time feeding their children healthy food due to time and money.  This shouldn’t be the case; healthy food should be more available to all people. This movie will be impacting my health/behavior by pushing me to go check out my local farmer’s market. That way I will know where the food has came from and what conditions were present. Yes, I would recommend this to a friend because it’s very informative and can help motivate the viewer to create a healthier lifestyle for themselves and for others. I’d tell people that this movie is overall well-put-together and it gets the message across crystal clear. I guarantee that you will question your diet habits after watching this.

  1. I definitely agree that Americans need to be educated about the food we eat and how its processed and made! I also, don't like the way the animals are treated and it was very hard to watch.I think that if healthy food was more available to people our country would be in a better state. I am totally questioning my diet habits and am definitely going to to work harder on changing it!!

  2. The whole movie was disturbing to me in the way america's food is prepared. In the movie is was stated that food was prepared this way because it was more cost effective for consumers. In my opinion it seemed more to serve the big food companies than the consumer. I found it was sad that the one family had to rely on the fast food chains to eat cheeply because the healthy food options in the grocery store were to expensive and they had a limited budget and could not afford the healthier options. This should not be the case for americans healthy food should be made more affordable than unhealthy foods.

  3. I agree with you about the cruelty of the animals and of how healthy food should be available for everyone. After seeing the movie, I still may go to the same stores, but I would check the condition of the food products to be sure they are "safe".

  4. I was also shocked when I saw those chickens in that dark room. It was terrible how they could not even walk!! I have been telling all my friends to watch this movie and hopefully change their diet like I did. Becoming vegetarian is a great Idea, but I am not sure how long I can last.

  5. I totally agree with you about looking into going to the farmers markets so that you know where your food is coming from. i also agree with your statement as to healthier food should be easier to purchase.

  6. I too was taken back on how the chickens were treated. Does it really matter that they see light? Im all for better treatment for the chickens and its sad to see that the companies are forced to raise the chcikens in these types of places. Giving the chickens a better life is the least we as humans could do. Im happy to see that the female farmer wanted the truth to be exposed,as you can see she was the only one with the guts to do so....good for her!

  7. This film has had the same impact on myself; just seeing how animals were treated made me sick to my stomach. I think that if we could somehow educate our nation, people would realize how bad conditions are for animals and for the farmers. The poor farmers are basically slaves for corporate businesses. It's sad to think that people cannot afford fruit and vegetables, but it's even worse to see a family who has no choice but to consume something that they already know is bad for them.

  8. I think the same way as you and how the animals were treated.I did not like the way that workes were treated to because they were working hard and they just push them like they were not important for them as the job was done for them.

  9. This film made me wonder why is it illegal to beat a dog, but it’s OK to treat a farm animal in this manner?
